What is pogo-sticking in SEO?

Glossary image

Pogo-sticking is a user behavior pattern in which a visitor clicks on a search result, quickly returns to the search engine results page (SERP), and then clicks on a different result — effectively "bouncing" between the SERP and multiple pages in rapid succession.

The term borrows its name from the toy pogo stick, capturing the back-and-forth motion between the results page and individual websites. It is closely related to bounce rate, but the two concepts are distinct. A bounce occurs when a user lands on a page and leaves without further interaction, regardless of where they go next. Pogo-sticking specifically describes the act of returning to the same SERP and selecting an alternative result, which signals that the first page failed to satisfy the user's query.

At the heart of pogo-sticking is the concept of search intent — the underlying goal a user has when entering a query. When a page does not match that intent, whether because the content is too shallow, poorly structured, or simply off-topic, users abandon it almost immediately and seek a better answer elsewhere. A short dwell time (the amount of time a user spends on a page before returning to the SERP) is a strong indicator that pogo-sticking has occurred.

The SEO significance of pogo-sticking lies in what it may communicate to search engines. While Google has not explicitly confirmed pogo-sticking as a direct ranking signal, the behavioral data it reflects — short dwell time, low engagement, and rapid return to the SERP — is widely understood to indicate poor content relevance or user experience. Over time, a pattern of pogo-sticking on a given result could contribute to that page losing visibility in the rankings, as search engines refine their understanding of which results genuinely satisfy user needs.

Reducing pogo-sticking requires addressing the root causes that drive users away. Content that directly answers the query at the top of the page, a clean and readable layout, fast page load speed, and a clear match between the page's meta title or description and its actual content all help retain visitors long enough to engage. When users find what they need without returning to the SERP, it is a strong signal that the page is fulfilling its purpose.

For SEO professionals and content strategists, pogo-sticking serves as a useful diagnostic concept. Monitoring dwell time and on-page engagement metrics through tools like Google Search Console or analytics platforms can surface pages where users consistently disengage, pointing toward opportunities to improve content depth, structure, or relevance to search intent.
