Bounce rate is calculated by taking the number of visitors who only view one page (a so-called bounce), and dividing it by the total number of visits to the website. The formula looks like this:

Bounce rate = (Number of bounced sessions / Total sessions) × 100

For example, if 100 users visit a page, and 70 of them leave the page without further interaction, the bounce rate would be 70%.

What is a good bounce rate?

Bounce rate varies greatly depending on the purpose of the website and the type of content. Generally considered a bounce rate to be lower if it is around 20-40% for e-commerce sites or landing pages with many clickable elements. For blogs and information pages, a higher bounce rate (up to 60-70%) can be normal, as users may quickly find the information they need and then leave the page.

  • 20-40 %: Very low, which is often a good sign for interactive pages or e-commerce platforms.
  • 40-60 %: Average bounce rate, especially for information pages or blogs.
  • 60 % and higher: High bounce rate, which can indicate potential problems with user experience, relevance or page content.

  • Improve page speed: Slow pages can cause visitors to abandon quickly. Optimize loading time for a better user experience.
  • Create engaging content: Ensure the content is relevant, valuable, and matches users' expectations.
  • Optimize the mobile experience: Many users visit sites via mobile devices. A mobile-optimized page improves the chances of longer visits.
  • Use clear call-to-actions (CTA): Make it easy for users to find what to do next (e.g., "Read more", "Sign up", or "Buy now").
