Signocore Glossary can link mentions of your terms in posts to their term pages, and show a short definition when a visitor points at a term link. Both features are off until you turn them on, and you can keep single terms, posts or sections out of them.
Turn on automatic links
- Go to Glossary → Settings and find the Glossary Links card.
- Turn on Automatic Linking.
- Under Content Types, choose where links are added. Only Posts is selected at first. Every public content type is listed, such as pages, products, FAQ questions or the glossary terms themselves.
- Set Links per Post, the most automatic links a single post can get. The default is 10, and you can choose from 1 to 50.
- Click Save Changes.
Open a post that mentions one of your terms to see the result. The link text stays exactly as you wrote it.
How terms are matched
- One link per term. Only the first mention of a term in a post is linked. A synonym counts as a mention of its term, so when a synonym comes first, it gets the link and later mentions of the term stay plain text.
- In reading order. Terms are linked in the order they appear, until the post reaches Links per Post.
- Whole words only. "API" is not linked inside "APIs" or "API-first". Add forms such as plurals as synonyms when you want them linked.
- Capitals matter for acronyms. A term written entirely in capitals, such as "SEO" or "API", is only matched in capitals. Other terms match whatever their case, so the term "Crawl budget" also links "crawl budget".
- The longest match wins. When one term is part of another, such as "search engine" and "search engine optimization", the longer term is linked where both fit.
- Links you already added count. When a post already links to a term page, that term is not linked a second time.
- Terms need two or more characters. A term page never links to itself.
Links are added to the main content of a single post when a visitor opens it. Archives, excerpts, widgets, comments, feeds and the REST API are left alone, and so is the glossary page itself, along with its translations when Signocore Multilanguage is active. Saving or deleting a term updates the links on every post right away. If your site uses a page cache, cached pages show the new links once the cache is refreshed.
Tooltips
Turn on Tooltips in the same card to show a short definition on links to your terms. Tooltips work on automatic links and on links you add yourself to a term page, in the content types you selected. They also work with Automatic Linking turned off, if you prefer to link terms by hand.
A tooltip shows the term, a short definition and a Read more link to the term page. The definition is the term's excerpt, or the first 35 words of its definition when the excerpt is empty. Terms without any text get no tooltip.
- With a mouse, the tooltip opens on hover and stays open while the pointer is on it.
- With a keyboard, it opens when the link gets focus. Escape closes it.
- On a touch screen, the first tap opens the tooltip and a second tap follows the link.
Term links with a tooltip get a dotted underline, which turns solid on hover. The tooltip has a light background and uses your theme's font and link color, and it loads its own small stylesheet, so it works with Default Styling turned off.
Keep terms, posts or sections unlinked
Exclude a term
- Open the term under Glossary → All Terms.
- In the Glossary Settings box below the editor, find the Automatic Linking section.
- Tick Exclude from automatic linking and save the term.
Mentions of the term in other content are no longer linked. Links you add to the term by hand still get a tooltip. The checkbox is only shown while Automatic Linking is on.
Turn off links in one post
- Open the post, page or other item.
- In the Glossary Links box in the sidebar, tick Turn off glossary links and tooltips in this content.
- Save the post.
The box appears on the content types chosen under Content Types, while Automatic Linking or Tooltips is on.
Exclude part of a post
Add the CSS class wpsgls-no-link to a block or an HTML element, and nothing inside it is linked. In the block editor, select the block, open Advanced in the block settings and enter the class under Additional CSS class(es).
Places that are never linked
Automatic links are never added inside:
- headings and existing links
- code, preformatted text, keyboard input and sample output
- buttons and form fields
- table header cells
- embedded frames, scripts, styles, SVG graphics and math
- the synonyms and related terms on term pages, and the related questions from Signocore FAQ
