What is an AI Overview (AIO)?

An AI Overview (AIO) is a Google-generated summary that appears at the top of a search results page, synthesizing information from multiple web sources to answer a user's query directly, without requiring them to click through to any individual website. Formerly known as Search Generative Experience (SGE) during its testing phase, AI Overviews became a standard feature of Google Search in 2024 and represent one of the most significant shifts in how search results are presented to users.

How AI Overviews Work

When Google determines that a query benefits from a synthesized answer, it generates a concise response block powered by its Gemini AI model. This block appears above traditional organic results, often accompanied by source citations displayed as small cards. The system draws on indexed web content to construct its answer, meaning the underlying sources are still web pages - but the user receives the distilled information directly on the results page rather than visiting those pages individually.

Impact on Organic Traffic and Click-Through Rates

AI Overviews have a measurable effect on organic search traffic. Because users can satisfy their informational intent without leaving the search results page, the phenomenon is closely related to Zero-Click Search - a pattern that has been growing steadily since the introduction of featured snippets and knowledge panels. Studies conducted after the broad rollout of AIOs indicate a meaningful reduction in click-through rates (CTR) for queries where an AI Overview is triggered, particularly for informational content.

For SEO professionals and publishers, this creates a dual challenge: content may be cited within an AIO and thus contribute to Google's answer, yet receive less direct traffic than it would have through a traditional organic ranking. Being cited as a source in an AIO does carry indirect value - it signals authority and can influence brand perception - but it does not translate to traffic in the same way a first-page ranking historically has.

Relevance to GEO and AEO

The rise of AIOs has accelerated interest in two related disciplines. Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) refers to the practice of structuring content so that AI-powered search systems are more likely to surface and cite it. Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) focuses more broadly on optimizing content for any system - including voice assistants and AI chatbots - that delivers direct answers rather than ranked links. Both disciplines are direct responses to the shift that AI Overviews represent: a search environment where visibility and traffic are increasingly decoupled.

For marketers and SEO practitioners, understanding AIOs is now a prerequisite for accurately interpreting traffic data, setting realistic performance benchmarks, and adapting content strategy to a search landscape where the traditional blue link is no longer the primary interface between a query and its answer.
